For many years the Apple iPhone stood alone as the smartphone of choice among those needing advanced functionaility for their phone.  There are alternatives, including the Blackberry, and phones that combined a PDA with a cellphone, but the feel of the iPhone with its internet access and apps more or less defined the category of phone that we now call smartphones.
